The deleted ‘Friends’ scene that’s been buried for years
We thought we had seen every single moment of Friends, but we were wrong. There’s actually a deleted Friends scene out there, and it’s one that you can’t see on Netflix. The scene in question was completely cut from the episode for its subject material, which is something that’s kinda odd to happen to a Friends episode. But when you hear the reason behind it being cut, and see the scene, you’ll understand why.
During the episode, “The One Where Rachel Tells Ross,” which is the episode in which Rachel tells Ross that she’s pregnant, Chandler and Monica are getting ready to go on their honeymoon. The deleted scene shows them arriving at the airport, already bickering in the way that Chandler and Monica do, and heading through security. That’s when Chandler spots a sign mentioning that the federal law prohibits jokes about flight hijacking and bombing. And of course, Chandler being Chandler, he immediately makes a joke about this subject and is immediately taken away by airport security.
Why was this scene cut? Well, the episode was set to air two weeks after the tragic events of September 11th (the episode actually aired on October 11th). Though it was written and filmed before the events that changed our world forever, the producers and writers at Friends decided to cut the airport security storyline all together. They went back and re-shot the scenes, so the episode you can watch (right now) on Netflix has the two trying to get bumped up to First Class instead.
The clip was originally uploaded to YouTube back in 2007, but it’s just starting to gain attention now—as in, this week. At the beginning of the video, there’s a message from the Friends crew, explaining why the made the decision to cut it, and why it’s coming online now. They write, “as part of the history of the show, we hope that the scenes can now be viewed in the spirit which they were originally intended.”
