Here’s the first official image of Deadpool. And yes, that’s Ryan Reynolds.
Deadpool’s back and he looks better than ever. .
Just who is Deadpool? Why is this new movie so exciting? He’s a Marvel character, but don’t try grouping him in with The Avengers. His real name is Wade Wilson, and though he started out doing notable government work, he wound up with some bad guys and the Weapon X project which genetically mutated him — just like how Wolverine got those claws. Instead of retractable weapons, Wilson’s mutation came with accelerated regeneration, and he’s basically immune to everything.
Wilson then became a mercenary, but he’s also a pretty talkative, sarcastic guy, and that’s earned him the nickname, “Merc with a Mouth.” In the comics, he’s known for “breaking the fourth wall” and turning directly to us — the readers — to either further explain what’s happening, or simply crack a joke. Deadpool’s really unlike any other character out there. Also he really loves tacos.
This, strangely enough, isn’t the first time Reynolds has played Deadpool in a Marvel movie. Deadpool was in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. With this past summer’s X-Men: Days of Future Past, all prior films and storyline were basically erased, so this Deadpool movie is free to pick up wherever, and do whatever—it wants with Wade Wilson. Reynolds was also more than game to jump back into the red suit, and we are so very thankful.
The released film description doesn’t shed any more light on to what Deadpool’s actually going to be up to this time around: “Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, Deadpool tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.”
Deadpool‘s now shooting in Vancouver, with a release planned for February 12th, 2016. Why yes, Deadpool sounds like the perfect Valentine’s Day weekend movie. We’ll be there.
