David Schwimmer Is Out Here Reigniting the ‘Friends’ “We Were on a Break” Debate
"It's not even a question," he boldly stated.

David Schwimmer of Friends fame is attempting to put the final nail in the coffin of the most iconic he-said-she-said arguments of all time. According to Schwimmer, who played Ross Gellar on the show, he and Jennifer Aniston’s Rachel were absolutely, unequivocally on a break.
Schwimmer shared his two cents on the Monday, July 21st, episode of The Tonight Show, when host Jimmy Fallon prodded for Schwimmer’s opinion on the “we were on a break” scandal. Friends fans remember that the fight sparked in Season 2 when Ross and Rachel had a major argument, and Ross, apparently believing they had broken up, slept with Chloe the copy girl. Rachel found out and accused him of cheating even though Ross famously maintained, “We were on a break!”
“People are so passionately divided,” on this issue, Schwimmer told Fallon. Yeah, it’s not even a question, he continued. They were on a break.
Schwimmer confirmed that he could have avoided this turmoil altogether if he had stuck to his guns when he originally turned down the role of Ross. He told Fallon, “I had a miserable experience on my first job as a series regular just before Friends…Basically I felt like a prop.”
“When you sign up for a show, you’re committing to five or six years of your life,” Schwimmer said, and his negative experience with his first show made him never want to sign on to another sitcom again. So, he initially turned down his agent when he presented Friends to him.
But thankfully, pilot director Jim Burrows ended up calling Schwimmer and told him that Ross’s character was written with Schwimmer in mind, which the actor said was “the biggest compliment ever.” At that moment, he knew he couldn’t turn down the part.
Can you imagine anyone else hollering “WE WERE ON A BREAK” with those worried eyes? No way!
And yes, the Friends reunion special is coming—it could be shot as soon as August if it’s safe enough for the cast and crew to gather.
Even though Schwimmer shared his side of the story, something tells us the “we were on a break” argument will never end. Maybe it’s something we can all hash out as a group during the reunion special.
