David Hogg’s ingenious tweet is already costing this Fox News host her sponsors

On March 28th, Fox News host Laura Ingraham mocked Parkland survivor David Hogg on Twitter for his college rejections. And now, at least three companies have pulled their ads from Ingraham’s show The Ingraham Angle after Hogg posted an ingenious tweet calling for a boycott.

It all started with Ingraham’s retweet of a Daily Wire article about Hogg being rejected from four University of California schools. The Fox News host not only shared the article but also wrote that Hogg had complained about his rejections. She then added that UCLA not accepting Hogg, who has a 4.1 GPA, was “totally predictable given acceptance rates.”

Hogg quickly fired back at Ingraham’s jab. The 17-year-old posted 12 of Ingraham’s top sponsors and instructed his nearly 600,000 followers to contact them. He wrote simply, “Pick a number 1-12 contact the company next to that #.” And before long, advertisers from Hogg’s list began to respond. Pet food company Nutrish was the first to announce that it would stop advertising on Ingraham’s show.

"We are in the process of removing our ads from Laura Ingraham's program," Nutrish tweeted on March 29th.

Other companies followed suit. A spokesperson for TripAdvisor issued a statement that it, too, would stop supporting The Ingraham Angle.

"In our view, these statements focused on a high school student, cross the line of decency," the spokesperson told CNBC. "As such, we have made a decision to stop advertising on that program."

Online furniture retailer Wayfair told The Daily Beastin a statement that “We do not plan to continue advertising” on Ingraham’s show. And Subaru told The Daily Beastthat it was looking into its ties with the Fox News program.

Ingraham later tweeted an apology to Hogg, saying she was sorry for “any upset or hurt” her previous tweet had caused. She posted the statement this afternoon, after the companies had withdrawn their support of her show.

The Parkland survivors have been attacked for their gun control activism before. Less than a week after the February 14th shooting, rumors circulated that Hogg and the other students were paid crisis actors. So it’s not entirely surprising that a conservative pundit like Ingraham would attack Hogg for something so personal, but it still shouldn’t have happened. We’re glad that Ingraham apologized, but, as an adult, she shouldn’t be picking on teenagers. We stand with the Parkland students in their fight to end gun violence.
