Here’s David Bowie’s last music video, released just days ago
On Sunday, the world lost the incomparable David Bowie: Singer, songwriter, actor, multi-instrumentalist, artist, and legend. But before he died, he left the world a precious parting gift. Just four days before he lost his 18-month battle with cancer – on the day of his 69th birthday – the star released “Lazarus,” a masterful opus serving as a goodbye to a world that truly, deeply loved him.
“He always did what he wanted to do. And he wanted to do it his way and he wanted to do it the best way. His death was no different from his life – a work of Art,” producer Tony Visconti wrote on Facebook this morning. “He made [his last album] Blackstar for us, his parting gift. I knew for a year this was the way it would be. I wasn’t, however, prepared for it. He was an extraordinary man, full of love and life. He will always be with us. For now, it is appropriate to cry.”
Given that Lazarus is a biblical figure who symbolizes rebirth and power over death, it’s easy to see Bowie’s final video as a work of art that will allow him to live forever. To see the magic the singer offered the world, and to hold on to that magic, all we have to do is press play and listen to Bowie croon, “Look up here, I’m in heaven.”
Throughout the video, the iconic artist does what he does best. He shows us his power. He gives us his words. He performs, letting us know that his legacy will live on to comfort us in the wake of such an overwhelming loss.
