Good (or bad?) news: Darth Vader will be in “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”
The good news is that we’re going to be seeing Darth Vader very soon!
The bad news is that we’re going to be seeing Darth Vader after he falls into the lava pit on Mustafar (Episode III), and before he rudely takes Princess Leia hostage (Episode IV). This Darth Vader is probably not going to be happy.
With the next Star Wars movie, Rogue One, a mere 176 days away at this point, we still know very little about the plot. What has been released is this: Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) is on a mission, accompanied by some Rebel comrades, to steal the plans for the Death Star. It’s an event that directly relates to what happens next, which is everything in Star Wars: A New Hope. That means that we are certainly going to be seeing some familiar faces around. While some are still solely speculation at this point, Entertainment Weekly can confirm that Darter Vader will be back.
Talking to Good Morning America this morning, EW’s resident Star Wars expert, Anthony Breznican, explained that Vader’s role in this new movie, “kind of looms large over the plot.”
Vader is not the new villain, because that’s being played by Bloodline’s Ben Mendleson. This new villain, Director Krennic, is “trying to fulfill the wishes of the emperor and he’s got kinda Vader looming in the background over his shoulder, making sure that he gets the job done.” Entertainment Weekly further describes that Krennic is looking to “avoid the wrath of his black-masked enforcer.”
That’d be Vader.
Who’s playing Vader? Don’t know that — yet. In the original trilogy, he was played by David Prowse and voiced by James Earl Jones. For the prequels, he was first played by a young Jake Llyod, and as an adult, Hayden Christensen. The again, at the time, he was still very much Anakin Skywalker, not quite Darth Vader yet.
While the role in Rogue One exists, who’s actually going to be in the black helmet is still a mystery. Star Wars loves its mysteries.
