Darth Vader *almost* had a cameo in “Guardians of the Galaxy”
Star Wars and Guardians of the Galaxy might be considered cousins in the huge family of Disney. You know, with Lucasfilm and Marvel respectively being their parents and…well, the exact details don’t matter because apparently there was almost a reference to Darth Vader in Guardians of the Galaxy and we are freaking out.
That’s right, this guy…
…almost came across this guy onscreen.
Actually, that first guy would’ve been more like…this guy.
Okay, time to explain: In an interview with Mashable, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige revealed that even before Lucasfilm and Marvel were under the Disney umbrella, he wanted to have a Star Wars reference in Guardians of the Galaxy as a way to tie Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) to Earth. And the idea was to do that through a nod to Darth Vader.
“Always, we wanted to reveal at a certain point in the movie that Peter Quill was a human from Earth. And for a long time, I really thought it was going to be the greatest thing in the world that you’re in a spaceship and he’s talking to one of the alien characters and he knocks over his bag and one of the alien characters bends down and picks [it] up, and it was a Darth Vader action figure, [and] goes, 'What's this?'
And it sounds like a pretty cool idea, kinda like when Rey appeared to have a Rebel pilot doll in The Force Awakens. But James Gunn ended up suggesting the Walkman — which, as we all know, led to one of the coolest parts of the series. Those parts of course being, the epic music!
Could there be potential Star Wars and Marvel crossovers in the future? Time will tell, but at the very least we ultimately ended up getting a Star Wars reference in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Captain America: Civil War — and that turned out perfectly.
