Did you catch Daniel Craig’s cameo in ‘Star Wars’?
Here’s an immediate SPOILER WARNING for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. If you haven’t caught a showing of the movie yet, turn back now. Or, if you’re cool with being spoiled for the biggest movie of the year, hey, you do you.
If you’ve seen Force Awakens, you, for one, know it’s awesome. And two, you know that a lot of familiar faces show up throughout the movie, in addition to just our normal Star Wars crew. One familiar face hanging around is never actually seen, but he’s certainly heard. If you paid close attention during the third act of the movie, you might have caught the voice of James Bond.
Yes, our four-time 007, Daniel Craig, has a surprising cameo in Force Awakens. He’s the stormtrooper assigned to guard Rey after she winds up on Starkiller Base — but no, I won’t detail their interaction because I don’t believe you turned away at my SPOILER WARNING.
This cameo is very interesting, but not actually a total surprise. You see, earlier this year there was a bit of a rumor going around that Craig had snagged a role in the new movie. That was because long-time Star Wars fan and one of director J.J. Abram’s good friends (and also Star Trek star) Simon Pegg let slip that he had landed a cameo role in the film. In the next breath, Pegg mentioned Craig had, too. According to Pegg, both he and Craig were playing stormtroopers, and then he finished with, “I shouldn’t have said that.”
Later, when asked about a cameo role in Star Wars, Craig responded, “Why would I ever bother doing something like that? Pffft. Play an extra in another movie?”
Now jump to screenings of Star Wars, where lo and behold, guess who shows up? Craig.
According to Entertainment Weekly, who talked to those close to the Force Awakens set, Spectre was shooting mere stages away on the Pinewood Studio in London. It was easy for Craig to sneak away from saving the world to travel to a galaxy far, far away for a quick little cameo.
As for Pegg, he actually wound up playing the junk dealer on Jukka who Rey deals with at the very beginning of the movie. If you want to catch all the other cameos, you’re going to have to see the movie yourself. Don’t want to spoil everything.
