This fiercely talented dance company gives us all the body-positive inspo we could ever need
Dancers are under tremendous pressure to be thin, but Akria Armstrong is fighting back against the stereotype that body size is related to a dancer’s ability to succeed. When the professional dancer had trouble finding an agent despite an impressive resume that includes a Beyoncé music video, Armstrong took matters into her own hands and formed an amazing dance company that gives us all the body-positive inspiration we could ever need.
Pretty Big Movement, an NYC-based company comprised of dancers with diverse bodies, has quickly gone viral — the company stars in The Scene’s video, and they’ve racked up nearly 9 million views in less than two days.
"With all the frustrations and going on auditions and getting told 'no,' I wanted to create a platform for other plus-size women to feel comfortable," Armstrong explains in the video.
The Scenes video isn’t their first amazing performance — previous videos prove these women have seriously enviable dance moves.
Pretty Big Movement is about more than than just dance — it’s about showing the world that our body sizes don’t dictate what we can and cannot do.
"It's about uplifting and empowering women to feel like they can be confident to do anything — not just dance," Armstrong says.
Countless little girls dream of becoming professional dancers, and Pretty Big Movement has sent them the powerful message that they shouldn’t throw in the towel if they grow up to be curvy rather than stick-thin.
