Here’s a funny story about American Pie that Schitt’s Creek fans will love

For five glorious seasons, Schitt’s Creek has been one of the most watchable comedies on TV. And this blessing on our Netflix queues wouldn’t exist without the work of father-son duo Eugene and Dan Levy, who co-created and star in the series. While Dan is best known for playing the eccentric David Rose on Schitt’s Creek, his father has been a household name for decades. Eugene appeared in the 1999 teen classic American Pie (which totally ruined the idea of band camp for us). The two Levys might work well together now, but Dan recently opened up about how his dad’s American Pie role led to some awkward moments as a teen.

The Levys spoke to EW for the magazine’s upcoming LGBTQ issue, and they both admitted that the ’90s flick was not a movie they could enjoy together. Dan, who was 15 when the comedy hit theaters, said that he “didn’t like the attention” when the movie came out. He even bowed out of attending the premiere with his father when a friend warned him that it would be uncomfortable. But the movie still led to some challenges for the actor. Specifically, some of his peers thought the movie was about him.

"Having that movie come out while I was in high school, I got a lot of idiots saying, 'Ooh. Is that a story about your life?'" Dan told EW. "And in my mind I was [like], 'I would kill to have a life that’s interesting enough to turn into a movie. No, thank you. And no, I didn’t fuck a pie.'"

Seriously, can you imagine having your high school classmates taunting you about that?

Poor Dan. But it’s a liiittle bit funny. On the bright side, it’s been 20 years since American Pie came out, so hopefully he’s not dealing with this misconception anymore. If anyone gives him trouble now, he can just fire back with the Schitt’s Creek catchphrase: “Ew, David.”
