Who are Dakota Johnson’s parents? Chances are you totally know them

Dakota Johnson is best known for her role as Anastasia Steele in the Fifty Shades trilogy. And while fans of the ultra-sexy movies may know a lot about the actress, many have no clue she comes from Hollywood royalty. Dakota Johnson’s parents are actors Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson.

Melanie Griffith is arguably best known for her role as Tess McGill in the 1988 film Working Girl. Her portrayal earned her a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress and an Academy Award nomination.

Griffith has also had prominent roles in a ton of other classic movies, including Night Moves, Something Wild, Crazy in Alabama, Buffalo Girls, Lolita,and Another Day in Paradise.Plus, she has a slew of impressive television credits, including roles on Hawaii Five-0, Nip/Tuck, Twins, and Raising Hope.

Don Johnson, Dakota’s father, is also extremely accomplished. He’s best known for playing James “Sonny” Crockett on the 1980s series Miami Vice, a role which earned him a Golden Globe Award and another Golden Globe nomination. He’s also well-known for playing Nash Bridges in the 1990s series Nash Bridges, in which he starred opposite Cheech Marin.

Don Johnson has also appeared in films like Machete, A Boy and His Dog, Guilty as Sin, Word of Honor, and The Hot Spot. Not to mention, Johnson and Griffith co-starred in several films together, including Born Yesterday, Paradise, and The Harrad Experiment. 

Basically, they’ve both had incredibly successful careers, so it’s no surprise their daughter followed in their footsteps.

Griffith and Don Johnson began dating in the early 1970s, when she was just 14 and he was 22. A few years later, on Griffith’s 18th birthday, the pair got engaged. They married in 1976 but divorced after just six months. They reconnected years later, remarried in June of 1989, and gave birth to Dakota in October of that year.

And in case you’re wondering, no, Dakota Johnson’s parents have not seen any of the Fifty Shades movies — and they probably never will.
