Daily Love Letter: Muffin Top

Dear Muffin Top,

We’ve known each other for a very long time. Some might say, we go way back. I’ll never forget the first time I met you. I was 12 years old, soon to turn 13 and I had just moved to a new city. I had literally no friends, so after school everyday for a month I sat at home watching General Hospital with my mom while eating handful after handful of Cheez-Its. One day, after a particularly rousing episode of General Hospital, I noticed my size 00 shorts were fitting a bit tighter than usual. I went into my room to assess the situation, and there you were. You were unlike anything I’d ever seen. Boldly rising above my pants as if to say “Hey girl. Sup? I’m here to stay.” We saw each other everyday. Pretty soon, I started making friends. I joined a soccer team. I neglected you, and without warning, you went away.

But, as soul mates often do, you came back into my life without warning some years later. I was angry with you for a long time. I just didn’t look the same in my low rise, distressed Abercombie and Fitch Jeans and I could no longer pull off my string bikinis from Pac Sun. I blamed it on you. After years and years of resentment, we have finally learned to coexist. We’ve been together for so long that sometimes I don’t even notice you’re there. You’ve helped me appreciate the little things in life like high rise jeans, vintage style one piece bathing suits and sweatpants. But you’ve also taught me that even with a healthy diet and exercise, you’re not going anywhere. Like a true friend, you’ve stuck by my side. Literally.
