Dad posts devastating Facebook video to raise awareness about his daughter’s illness

Grab some tissues, guys. Our hearts are breaking over a very emotional Facebook video this dad has made in an effort to raise awareness about his daughter’s rare neurological disorder.

A. J. Tesler’s 5-year-old daughter, Magnolia, has been diagnosed with Rett Syndrome, a debilitating neurological condition that affects 350,000 girls and women worldwide. According to Tesler, clinical studies have isolated the cause of the disease and found its symptoms to be reversible, but efforts for a cure face funding challenges because Rett’s Syndrome is so rare. His video is a direct appeal to Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, for help.

Last December, Zuckerberg and Chan announced the start of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, a charitable foundation with its goal to “advance human potential and promote equality in areas such as health, education, scientific research and energy.” Tesler is asking the Initiative to pledge financial assistance for finding a cure for Rett’s Syndrome.

In the video, he holds up a series of cards that tell Magnolia’s story. They read, in part:

We’re already crying all the tears at this point.

Tesler goes on to say:

The message ends with a simple plea. “Please help save my daughter’s life. Before it’s too late.” It’s utterly heartbreaking.

Tesler’s message did, in fact, reach Zuckerberg. Within two days, the Facebook founder responded with a comment that read:

Can you imagine what the world would be like if the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative is successful in its goal? It’s a big dream. But something tells us if anyone can do it, it’s Zuckerberg and Chan.

Magnolia and her dad thanked Zuckerberg for his response in another moving video, which you can watch below. We’re so touched by Magnolia’s story and the love and devotion of her determined dad. So. Many. Feels. We’re pulling for you, Magnolia.
