A man lost his wife after she gave birth to quadruplets, now social media is stepping in to help
There’s a lot to be said about social media. Some think it’s a curse — that it keeps people looking down at their phones and avoiding the real world. Some think it’s to blame for rampant bullying, trolling and negativity. But sometimes, things happen that make us realize how amazing social media truly has the power to be. And that’s exactly what recently happened to one brave dad and his quadruplet newborns.
Earlier this year, 29-year-old Carlos Morales went through the absolute unthinkable when he lost his wife, 36-year-old Erica Morales, just hours after she gave birth to the couple’s quadruplets. For years, Carlos and Erica had been trying to conceive, and after many failed attempts and one miscarriage, they conceived through IVF — and were blessed with four little ones. Tragically, after going into labor and safely delivering all four babies, Erica experienced unexpected and severe blood loss and passed away before she even had the chance to hold them. Carlos was suddenly left with three brand-new baby girls and a baby boy.
“I went from having the best day of my life to the next morning experiencing the worst day of my life,” Carlos told People in an interview. “My four babies came into the world and then my wife died.”
Erica’s best friend, Nicole Todman, took it upon herself to start a GoFundMe page for Carlos and the babies. She writes:
“The expense of raising 4 children alone is quite daunting for any middle class family now the with the loss of Erica’s income her husband will need all the help he can get. This is an extremely emotional time, Erica’s passing is traumatic and my goal is to help ease the financial worry as much as possible so every dollar helps if it’s $1 or $1000 it will all be used to provide for the beautiful babies Erica fought so hard to have and in the end gave her life for.”
Fast-forward a couple months, and the crowdfunding page has been shared through social media all over the place. Together, over 8,500 people have raised over $300K for the family. It’s a silver lining in a terrible story, it’s also social media done beautifully right.
We have an enormous gift at this moment in time and that’s connection. Thanks to the Internet, thanks to social media, we are able to help people we’ve never met and make this large world feel more like a global neighborhood. This story is tragic. What Carlos endured is something no one should have to go through. But there is solace in knowing that thanks to this interconnected world, we’re all able to help one another, just a little bit.
