The CW’s fall schedule is out — with more Julie Plec coming soon!
New, daring TV lineups are my favorite part of fall, even more so than cute boots and thick socks and crunchy leaves and hot lattes and fall-smell and new-school-year-feelings that fill my heart. The CW just released their new fall lineup and it looks SO AMAZING, you guys. I’m already excited for sweater weather.
The CW focuses on its teen and young adult audience, which means (luckily for us) lots of action, romance, drama, fantasy, and the kind of risk-taking that’s rare for more serious, slowly-paced shows popular with the olds. It’s clearly been a successful formula for The CW, which only has room for one new show in the fall.
Midseason, however, we’ll get two other new shows, one of them from aspirational BFF Julie Plec! You know Julie as the showrunner of both The Vampire Diaries and The Originals. She’s basically The CW’s Shonda Rimes, and she’s getting a new show that will premiere midseason. Containment is a plague drama with a heart-pounding trailer. From what we can tell, it’ll focus on people sealed in and kept out of a contained (duh) area in Atlanta after a mysterious and fatal illness breaks out, with more tension and drama than you can shake a stick at. Midseason will also see a new superhero drama called DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow.
Okay, with that Julie fangirling out of the way, let’s get to the shows solidified for the fall lineup. Here’s how we’ll be spending our weeks:
MONDAY
8-9 p.m. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
This is the only new show introduced at the beginning of the CW fall lineup. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is co-created by Aline Brosh McKenna, the most wicked of cool ladies. (She graduated from Harvard and wrote movie faves The Devil Wears Prada, Annie, and Cinderella.) It’s been described by CW exec Adam Pedowitz as “very funny and very different — a blue-skies show with a very dark twist,” and we’re pretty pumped for the musical numbers, too.
9-10 p.m. Jane the Virgin
If you’re not watching Jane yet, you should be. Gina Rodriguez won an Emmy for her performance, and it’s one of the most refreshing shows out there. Telenovela-style drama with a happy heart? Yes please!
TUESDAY
8-9 p.m. The Flash
I’m not mad at it.
9-10 p.m. iZombie
iZombie is the perfect neapolitan TV dessert of rad, complex female lead with smarts and pluck, supernatural angst and romance, and sciencey detective work. And Raul Kohli as Dr. Ravi Chakrabarti (bringing the #Chakraparty) isn’t too bad either.
WEDNESDAY
8-9 p.m. Arrow
I wish there were some female-led superhero series in the CW line up. (Agent Carter (ABC) is really bomb, you guys, albeit only superhero adjacent, and I have high hopes for CBS’s Supergirl.) In the meantime, Arrow is pretty darn fun, and we can always count on the CW to give us some Grade A romance.
9-10 p.m. Supernatural
I will always resent Supernatural for being the question I got wrong at trivia night. Hey, Sophie from the past: Supernatural just got renewed and will have ELEVEN seasons. ELEVEN.
THURSDAY
8-9 p.m. The Vampire Diaries
9-10 p.m. The Originals
#JulieNight!! Two Plec-led shows means an evening of murder, romance, amazing soundtracks, and games of power that have consequences for the whole world. It makes sense to have these TVD and The Originals back-to-back, since they’re set in the same world and have a ton of crossover. We’ve already talked about how this current season is Nina Dobrev’s last on TVD and theorized about her exit from the show, and the writers have a big job in front of them to make me okay with Steroline. (#Klaroline forever, y’all.)
The Originals can just keep on keepin’ on, making me both wish I were in New Orleans and terrified to visit. Death is pretty de rigeur for both shows, albeit kind of reversible. Count on Thursdays to make you feel like it’s totally reasonable to rip someone limb from limb for slightly annoying you (because they’ll heal supernaturally quickly, obvs).
FRIDAY
8-9 p.m. Reign
9-10 p.m. America’s Next Top Model
The best part of both of these shows is the fashion and the high drama. That’s sort of the point of ANTM, with Queen Tyra helping her bevy of up-and-comers to smize and be professional, even through shoots with crazy premises and difficult poses. The fashion of Reign, however, was more of a surprise. Ever since it started, Reign‘s attitude towards actual history has pretty much been a hearty side-eye, much to the benefit of the show’s plotlines. Instead, we’ve been treated to two seasons of royal Gossip Girl mixed with Scandal as Mary navigates the court and her heart with a mysterious ally lurking in the secret passageways of the castle. There’s real life, death, and politics at stake, but the ladies on Reign are too busy looking fabulous in, essentially, modern fashion to worry — like the time Kenna wore this gorgeous but egregiously anachronistic dreamcatcher necklace. More beautifully nonsensical fashion, please!!
