The Crown has cast two more major characters, and celebratory crumpets are in order
Netflix’s cult-favorite series The Crown just added two more major characters to its roster. British actor Josh O’ Connor will take on the role of Prince Charles for the period drama’s upcoming third and fourth seasons. Additionally, British actress Marion Bailey will take on the role of Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. With Meghan Markle and Prince Harry coverage coming to a slow, royal halt, this casting could not have come at a better time. Royal fever is real.
O’Connor and Bailey will join the ranks of Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II, Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret, Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip, and Erin-Doherty as Princess Anne. O’Connor previously starred in the 2017 film God’s Own Country, for which he won a Best Actor in the British Independent Film Award. Bailey has starred in films such as Allied, Mr. Turner, and I’ll Be There. O’Connor will replace Billy Jenkins and Julian Baring, who both played a young Prince Charles, with Bailey replacing Victoria Hamilton as the Queen Mother in the inaugural seasons.
In a statement about his new role, O’Connor said:
“I am thrilled to be joining The Firm for the next installment of ‘The Crown.’ Seasons 3 and 4 will follow some of the most turbulent events in the Prince of Wales’ life and our national story, and I’m excited to be bringing to life the man in the midst of it all. I’m very aware it’s a formidably talented family to be joining, but reliably informed I have the ears for the part and will fit right in.
Bailey also released a statement, saying: “It’s a brilliant show, and we have a tough act to follow, but what a gift to be playing the fascinating and greatly loved Queen Mother. Thrilled to be on board and working with such a top-notch team.”
Season 2 of The Crown garnered five Emmy nominations this year. Claire Foy is nominated for Lead Actress for her role as Queen Elizabeth II, Vanessa Kirby and Matt Smith are nominated for their supporting roles as Princess Margaret and Prince Philip, and Matthew Goode is nominated for Guest Actor for his role as Antony Armstrong-Jones. The series also garnered a Best Drama Series nomination.
The Crown Season 3 reportedly started filming in July, and new episodes will hit Netflix in 2019. Bring out the dancing corgis.
