Great idea! Netflix casts Helena Bonham Carter to play Princess Margaret in “The Crown” Season 3

Update, May 3rd, 2018, 10:15 a.m. PST: Surprise, well, not surprise? Netflix just confirmed that, yes, Helena Bonham Carter will play Princess Margaret in the third and fourth installments of Netflix’s critically-acclaimed royal series, The Crown. Hooray for us all, because we know Bonham Carter makes every character she plays unique and utterly real (Bellatrix Lestrange, anyone?). Netflix also announced that Season 3 of the series will feature actor Jason Watkins as Harold Wilson, a Labour prime minister who served Britain in the 1960s and 1970s.

“I’m not sure which I’m more terrified about — doing justice to the real Princess Margaret or following in the shoes of Vanessa Kirby’s Princess Margaret,” Bonham Carter said in a statement. “The only thing I can guarantee is that I’ll be shorter [than Vanessa].”

To be honest, giving her any role is a GREAT IDEA. But we’re especially fond of the news that Helena Bonham Carter might play Princess Margaret for the next two seasons of The Crown.

Now, this isn’t confirmed…yet. There hasn’t been an ~official announcement~ per se, but lots of folks are saying she’s “nearing a deal” or that she’s “expected to join” The Crown. So we’re going to hedge our bets, but also get very excited about this because we have no self control. Carter in this role, which Vanessa Kirby has played for the past two seasons, is just the literal best thing that could happen.

Also fun: Carter played the Queen Mother in The King’s Speech. So if the casting becomes official, she’d basically be playing her own daughter.

Considering Matt Smith has played Prince Philip in the first two seasons, it begs the question: Is this The Crown or Doctor Who? Carter being her own mother and daughter is, like, so timey-wimey that we’re leaning toward the latter for sure. (Is everything in Britain secretly just another plot line of Doctor Who? Seriously, has anybody noticed Prince Philip carrying a fob watch?)

Whatever the case, Carter is a super talented actress — hi, she’s Bellatrix Lestrange — and we’re sure she’ll work wonders with this role.

We’re also very excited at the prospect of Carter playing opposite Olivia Colman as the queen herself, Elizabeth. They’re both so fun to watch, and together? UGH. We can’t wait to see what The Crown Season 3 has in store.
