Hold up, the creator of “Sherlock” believes the show will come back
Fans of Dr. John Watson and Sherlock Holmes will be pleased to learn that Steven Moffat, Sherlock‘s creator, believes that the show will return for a fifth season, and so much YES!
It’s been pretty up and down as to whether we’d be getting another season of the popular BBC mystery drama. The fourth season finale wrapped things up nicely, and the cast has frequently commented about how they might be too busy to align schedules and find time to make any more Sherlock. Indeed, Andrew Scott, who plays Moriarty, said that if the show were to return it wouldn’t do so for years.
But now showrunner Steven Moffat has given Sherlock fans a little ray of sunshine.
Moffat, who also helms the long-running science fiction show Doctor Who (although his tenure as showrunner ends soon), was speaking on BBC Radio 2 when he was quizzed about returning to Baker Street.
“We did [the last series] a year ago, just about, and I’ve been flat-out on Doctor Who ever since. So I haven’t really thought about it,” he admitted. “[Co-creator Mark Gatiss has] been doing other stuff as well, so we haven’t sat down and had a proper talk about what we would do with another series.”
Moffat, however, then gave us a glimmer of hope.
"I sort of assume we will. I sort of assume we'll come back," he said.
Of course, the BBC has yet to recommission Sherlock for a fifth season, and it’s still not known whether there’ll be time in the actors’ schedules.
But this revelation marks a change of heart for Moffat who, after the end of Season 4, explained that he would be okay if the show never came back.
“Not doing it again would be fine,” he said earlier this year speaking to Broadcast Now. “If that was it, then that would be it.”
Hopefully, then, we’ll have more Sherlock to look forward to in the future. While it might be a few years away, we’re totally willing to wait a bit for this beloved series’ return.
