4 Creative Fashion Films You Need to See

If there’s one thing we’ve learned from fashion, it’s to expect the unexpected. The spectacle that is fashion week transpired in New York, London and Milan (what happens in Paris remains to be seen). While oohs, aahs, and WTFs were to be expected, there’s been a visible shift in the way that designers showcase their work. Of note, during New York Fashion Week, Opening Ceremony ditched the outmoded runway format and produced a satirical one-act play, 100% Lost Cotton. Written by Spike Jonze and Jonah Hill, the show was centered around a satirical model casting and starred Elle Fanning, Dree Hemingway, Bobby Cannavale, Catherine Keener, John Cameron Mitchell, Alia Shawkat and Rashida Jones. These creative approaches to showcasing collections are becoming more and more common, and it’s wonderful.

Fortunately, fashion week isn’t the only time designers tout their creative concepts. Now more than ever, advertising seems to be turning over a new leaf. Gone are the days of predictable magazine spreads. People are waking up to humorous, inspiring concepts that go so far beyond the expectations of fashion, its not even funny (but, you know, it is). There are some hilarious fashion films out there, folks. They do more than showcase designer clothes on models; they tell stories! They make statements about humanity! They don’t ostracize you; they include you! They make you laugh and think! This is fashion, after all – shouldn’t the advertising be as inspired as the clothing? Now that I’m done exclaiming things, here are four creative fashion films that are absolute must-sees.

1. Miu Miu – Somebody: Women’s Tales #8
Director: Miranda July

Have you ever found it utterly painful to say something to someone’s face? Ever wish you could just enlist the help of someone else to do it for you? This short film follows the stories of a few strangers who use an app called “Somebody” to do all of their heavy talking. It’s hilarious, painful and beyond my creative comprehension (Miranda July, you’re a freakin’ genius). You almost forget you’re watching a fashion film. That is, until you start noting all of the consistently whimsical outfits.

2. The Great Divide – No F****** Around In Room 427
Director: Danny Sangra

We’ve all been there: You’ve bought a budgeted hotel room for a few nights, only to find that there are some, err. . . problems. Either the TV has four channels (three of which are static), or you’ve been given a single towel equivalent to that of a paper napkin (I could go on, but I’ll save that for another post). No matter what type of nightmarish “accommodations” you’ve seen, I can almost guarantee you haven’t seen anything like No F****** Around In Room 427.

3. Rachel Antonoff – Crush
Director: Bianca Giaever

Rachel Antonoff brings the warm and fuzzy feelings back to fashion in her S/S 14 film, Crush. Rather than writing up a fictional love story, Antonoff opted to tell the real-life story of how her parents met. Jack Antonoff (Rachel’s real-life brother) and Gillian Jacobs are the two lovebirds that depict Antonoff’s parents. Keep an eye out for a Jenny Slate appearance, too!

4. Viva Vena – Fashion Film
Director: Matthew Frost

Lizzy Caplan + satirical hipster fashion film = GENIUS. Thank you, Matthew Frost, for finding the humor in all those pretentious fashion films. You have no idea how happy I am that our world now has an accurate (and hilarious) antithesis.
