Crazy Rich Asians is officially still crushing it at the box office

Even though audiences and Hollywood insiders alike talk about the importance of representation on the big screen, it still feels like the industry is frustratingly slow when it comes to including new voices and narratives. But the massive success of Crazy Rich Asians—the first major studio film to feature an all-Asian cast with Asian Americans in leading roles since 1993’s The Joy Luck Club—serves as yet another reminder that diversity on screen is both welcome and profitable. The movie is still completely crushing it in its second week at the box office.

This year’s summer movie season may be winding down, but Crazy Rich Asians remained at the top spot nationwide during its second weekend, sliding only 5.7 percent in ticket sales, according to Box Office Mojo—and that’s before Sunday night sales were factored in. Along with rave reviews from critics and fans alike, the movie’s financial success will hopefully prove to decision-makers in Hollywood once and for all that audiences are hungry for on-screen diversity.

And lucky for us, a sequel is already in the works and will be based on the second book in the trilogy, China Rich Girlfriend.

We’re beyond excited for the continued success of Crazy Rich Asians. A film like this was long overdue, and we hope it helps pave the way for other diverse stories.
