We’re so crazy in love with ‘Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”s incredible “Lemonade”-inspired season premiere
The CW’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, amongst all of the channel’s (admittedly amazing) superhero and/or vampire shows, is a unique beast. Like Jane the Virgin, the show is a quirky (but surprisingly emotional) comedy. Helmed by the enormously talented co-creator/star, Rachel Bloom, the series was easily one of the most unique to debut in years on any network.
It was no surprise to any of us who loved Crazy Ex-Girlfriend from the moment the laugh-old-loud hilarious theme song dropped in the pilot that Bloom would win both a Golden Globe and a Critics’ Choice Award for Best Actress in a TV comedy. Watching main character Rebecca Bunch travail her bizarre and often uncomfortable love life (all the while with imagined musical asides) was consistently hilarious.
We were all waiting on pins and needles to see whether the brilliantly witty series could possibly top its near-flawless first season. Luckily, based on last night’s premiere, it seems the show will deliver.
It’s been over twelve hours and we’re still laughing about the amazing “Love Kernels,” Rebecca’s first major musical number of the second season. The oddly catchy number is a clear homage to Beyoncé’s mega-hit “Lemonade” from earlier this year.
The video debuted the Monday prior to the October 21st series premiere, courtesy of Entertainment Weekly. We were already pretty blown away by the faithful homage to Queen Bey’s epic visual album and psyched to see the song in-context once the season premiered.
The song, which was all about Bloom’s character, the lovelorn Rebecca, grasping at any comment – “love kernels” – from her obsessive crush/new fling Josh that might mean he loves her, was somehow even better within the episode’s context.
As expected, Twitter was all about the genius satirical send-up of Bey’s work of “abstract symbolism.”
In particular, Rebecca’s turn as a “sexy fashion cactus” was a huge hit.
That awk moment when you have two cacti but neither of them look as cute as @Racheldoesstuff 🌵 #CrazyExGirlfriend #LoveKernels @CW_CrazyXGF pic.twitter.com/i5cLD9lzfP

Others, including fellow members of the Crazy Ex-Girlfriend cast, were just totally into Rebecca’s ridiculously over-the-top but fully relatable song.
