The creator of ‘Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’ just reinvented the New Year’s Song

You know that song people sing at midnight on New Year’s — the one that starts with, “Should old acquaintance be forgot,” but then goes on for about two more minutes, presumably in Latin? Those words are seriously hard to understand. Well, that little diddy is called “Auld Lang Syne,” and it was written by Robert Burns in 1788.

1788 was so long ago. It’s time for an update! At least, that was the thought process of Rachel Bloom, star and co-creator of this year’s hit musical comedy series Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. The writer/performer shared what she calls “The New Official Happy New Year’s Song” on her Twitter, and it looks like “Auld Lang Syne” has some competition.

Rachel’s New Year’s tune is short, sweet, and easy to memorize. Mostly, the lyrics are “Happy/Happy New Year,” with a bridge that reminds listeners not to drink too much champagne and, more importantly, not to get in a car after consuming alcohol. Both fun and responsible!

Citizens of Twitter have spoken, and “The New Official New Year’s Song” might just be, well, the new official New Year’s song. 

Someone call Ryan Seacrest! In the meantime, we’ll be singing this all the way into 2016.
