Prince just dropped a surprise cover song, because he’s Prince

With possible album drops from Rihanna and Kanye West lingering on the horizon, Prince is probably the last person you’d expect to drop a song today. Then again, it’s Prince — he’s kind of like the unofficial master of the unexpected.

Just in time for his US Hit & Run tour, Prince and his backup band, 3rdEyeGirl, have released a cover song of Christian singer-songwriter Nichole Nordeman’s, “What If”. A departure from the smooth sounds of Nordeman’s ballad, Prince’s cover is chock full of electric guitar. The cover version also features vocals from 3rdEyeGirl’s drummer, Hannah Welton.

“What If” is Prince’s first song since his solo album, Art Official Age and his collaborative project with 3rdEyeGirl, Plectrumelectrum, both of which were released last year.

The song was released to Louisville, KY radio last night, which is precisely where he’ll be kicking off his US Hit & Run tour on Saturday. Keep your eyes and ears peeled for further tour dates, though. Prince has been known to perform spontaneously, as evidence of his European Hit & Run tour.

Though Prince hasn’t been known for covering songs in his day, “What If” is definitely a welcomed surprise. Now, indulge in the Prince resurgence and listen to the song below!
