Courteney Cox just spilled the beautiful, heartbreaking truth about her breakups from David Arquette and Johnny McDaid
Courteney Cox will always be an inspiring actress, which is why it’s super important that she opened up and got real about something a lot of us often face — the aftermath of a bad breakup. But, she chose an interesting platform to share this information — on the set of Running Wild with Bear Grylls.

Grylls put Cox through a survival test, and decided to ask a bit about her romantic life in the process. First, Cox opened up about one of her first public breakups, from ex-husband David Arquette back in 2010.
“We found ourselves leading separate lives and just coexisting and being great friends, but not having the intimacy that … is so important in a relationship. I think you really need to work in a relationship, and I think that we tried. We’re just really different, too,” Cox said, noting that she was looking for a bit more of an intimate connection.
Cox is currently dating Snow Patrol musician Johnny McDaid, and while the two are currently together, they did have a bit of a rough patch: In 2015, the two briefly separated, after announcing their engagement. While they’re back together, the breakup was definitely a little devastating for her.
“There’s something about … you know, he’s from Ireland. And the way he regards love is precious,” she told Grylls. “We have to treat it in a different way. It’s more special. … You coddle it. So, I didn’t know how to regard love the way he does. And it definitely made a lot of mistakes that I see, whether it’s co-dependency or people-pleasing. I didn’t know how to bring it in. It was always external. I definitely have learned a lot, and no matter what, I will be a better person from that breakup, even though it was so brutal.”
Since Cox’s breakup with Arquette seemed to be somewhat mutual, and always friendly (the two lovingly still co-parent daughter Coco, who’s currently 12) this small parting was definitely on a completely different level. Fortunately, it seems like Cox and McDaid truly grew from the experience, and currently have a relationship that they both truly believe in.
It’s incredible that Cox is so willing to share these parts of her life, proving that she’s really a great role model for young women looking for a little bit of advice. Cox has been through quite a lot, and has managed to stay both healthy and positive throughout all of it.
