An ‘Empire’ Cookie Lyon prequel series? Yes, please
Guys, stop what you’re doing, take a seat, and put any fragile items down, because we have some seriously groundbreaking news. We may be getting a prequel series featuring our totally fave Empire character: Cookie Lyon. YAAAS.
Though Empire is filled with a powerhouse of truly amazing cast members and characters, there’s one who takes the cake (or should we say, cookie?): The fierce, outspoken, ambitious queen-of-a-character Cookie Lyon, played by the incredibly talented Taraji P. Henson.
Turns out, the creators of Empire are well aware of the gem they’ve created with Cookie. While the potential spin-off isn’t *officially* in the works, creator Lee Daniels told reporters at the Television Critics Association’s press tour in Beverly Hills that he’s seriously considering a prequel featuring a younger version of Cookie in all her glory, according to Entertainment Weekly.
“I think there is going to be a spin-off from Empire, without question,” Daniels told reporter. “There’s so much ripe story that we’ve talked about, about Cookie’s family.”
After the panel, Daniels gave the reporters some more juicy info about what the spin-off would hypothetically entail — specifically, about her upbringing in Philadelphia. “How did [Cookie] get to where she’s at right now?” he told reporters. “Let’s go back and understand her mother. Let’s go back and understand her sisters. Let’s understand the makings of her. And that I know — because I know Cookie.”
Unfortunately, if this series is gonna happen, it’s not gonna be for some time. “I don’t think we’re there quite yet,” Daniels told reporters. “I’ve got to work on Star.”
Star is Daniels other new series, a musical drama about a girl group officially announced today as a pilot order. The show was likely inspired by Empire as well — which makes sense, considering how vastly popular and beloved it has become after just one season.
The second season of Empire will premiere on FOX on September 23rd, so hey, though we may have a long time to wait until our beloved Cookie spin-off, at least we’ve got a second season coming soon, which is promising to be a good one.
Lee, we know you said nothing is official, but we’ve already got our hearts invested. Don’t go breakin’ our hearts.
