Constance Wu makes herstory with her 2019 Golden Globe nomination

Constance Wu has received her first-ever Golden Globe nomination, and it is no small feat. Wu garnered a Best Actress in a Motion Picture in a Musical or Comedy nomination for her role in Crazy Rich Asians, making her the first Asian actress to receive a nom since 1974. So, it’s been a bit over 40 years since an Asian actress was recognized in the category.

As CNN reports, the last Asian actress to receive a nomination in the category was Yvonne Elliman, who was recognized for her role in 1973’s Jesus Christ Superstar. Prior to Elliman’s nom, only two other Asian women were nominated in the category: Miyoshi Umeki, for her role in 1961’s Flower Drum Song, and Machiko Kyō, for her role in 1956’s The Teahouse of the August Moon.

Wu starred in Jon M. Chu’s breakout summer rom-com Crazy Rich Asians, the first major American studio film to feature an all-Asian cast since 1993’s The Joy Luck Club. Based on Kevin Kwan’s best-selling novel of the same name, Crazy Rich Asians follows Rachel Chu (Wu) as she accompanies her boyfriend, Nick Young (Henry Golding), to his best friend’s wedding in Singapore. There, she learns of Nick’s massive family wealth and must contend with his disapproving mother, Eleanor (Michelle Yeoh). The film shattered major box-office records, and it was announced that a sequel (the second installment of Kwan’s trilogy) was in the works just a few days after its release.

Wu’s historical nomination comes at the heels of news that Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg will co-host the upcoming awards ceremony on January 6th. Wu will be up against Emily Blunt (Mary Poppins Returns), Olivia Colman (The Favourite), Elsie Fisher (Eighth Grade), and Charlize Theron (Tully) in the best actress category. Crazy Rich Asians also received a nomination in the Best Motion Picture for a Musical or Comedy category.

The Fresh Off the Boat actress took to Twitter on December 6th to gush about her nomination, writing, “What a morning to have had my phone on Do Not Disturb Mode till now… I’m ecstatic but also in shock! Thank you @goldenglobes !!!” false

Tune into the 2019 Golden Globes on January 6th on NBC to watch our fave make herstory. Bok bok, bitch!
