Demi Lovato Won’t Wear a White Wedding Dress—and These 11 Celebs Didn’t Either

We're making new Pinterest boards now.

It’s wedding planning time for Demi Lovato, and she’s taking a non-traditional path, which we love. Lovato got engaged to her BF Max Ehrich in July, and while the pandemic has put much of her planning on hold, she already knows details about one key thing: her wedding dress.

“I have my image for what I would want it to [look like] if I got to do a big celebration. I don’t wanna give it away, but it’s definitely not a white dress,” Lovato told PopCrush. If you’ve seen her “Tell Me You Love Me” music video, you now the singer looks incredible in a traditional white bridal gown, but now, she’s ready to switch it up for her IRL big day.

Yes, she has started looking at dresses, she said, though she still doesn’t know what her wedding will look like at this point.

“On one hand, I would love to elope because my life is so public and I want to keep it sacred between me and him,” Lovato said. “On the other hand, I want my friends and family to be there for a celebration, but I can’t do that until the pandemic’s over ’cause it’s not safe.”

No matter what Lovato and Ehrich decide on how to tie the knot, Lovato’s non-traditional wedding dress will be in good celebrity company. Scroll through for 11 other celebrities who opted against a white wedding dress.

Jessica Biel

For her 2012 wedding to Justin Timberlake, Jessica Biel wore a Giambattista Valli pink wedding dress. She opened up to Elle about her decision against white, according to The Huffington Post.

“I have never been crazy about all-white wedding dresses, for me at least,” she said. “[Giambattista Valli] had created that same fabric in a fuchsia-and-pink combination for a dress in a previous collection, and I asked him if he could create that same pattern in a white combination, and he suggested pink. It was a bit of a leap of faith at the time, but it turned out better than I could have ever imagined.”

Sarah Jessica Parker

Before she was Carrie Bradshaw, Sarah Jessica Parker was taking fashion risks. The actor wore a very non-traditional Morgane Le Fay black dress for her 1997 wedding to Matthew Broderick. Years later, in 2016, SJP said she “regrets” her dress choice.

“Oh, I wish it was because I was badass,” she said on Watch What Happens Live about her black wedding dress. “I just was too embarrassed to spend any time looking for a wedding dress. There was a store that I liked that I knew, and I just went and got whatever they had hanging.” She also said she would do it differently if she were getting married today, though honestly, she slays it.

Amber Tamblyn

Questlove snapped a picture of Amber Tamblyn walking down the aisle in a yellow wedding dress during her nuptials to David Cross. In an interview with Us Weekly, the Sisterhood f the Traveling Pants star elaborated that her dress was “marigold” and it “had a train in the back that was cream.” As for why she decided against white, she said, “There’s nothing really traditional about me.”

Gwen Stefani

For her 2002 wedding to now-ex-husband Gavin Rossdale, Gwen Stefani wore a custom Dior wedding dress that was dip-dyed and hand-painted in hot pink for an ombre effect. Now that she reportedly plans to marry Blake Shelton, we can’t wait to see what she wears for her wedding this time around.

Chrissy Teigen

Teigen wore three Vera Wang dresses at her wedding to John Legend—two in traditional white and one red reception dress. That mermaid silhouette in a standout deep red color is everything.

Mandy Moore

Mandy Moore married Taylor Goldsmith in a Rodarte, polka-dot, blush pink wedding dress on November 18th, 2018. For the reception, she went even more non-traditional in a black cut-out dress.

Kristen Bell

If Demi Lovato needs inspo on a small, intimate wedding, she can take a look at Kristen Bell’s courthouse ceremony to Dax Shepard. Bell wore a black jumpsuit for the low-key affair, and it turns out, she would have been just as happy in jeans.

“I remember my husband picked out my outfit,” she said, according to Martha Stewart Weddings. “I thought we were going to go in jeans,” she added, but when Shepard opted to wear a tux, he also helped her decide on her look. “He went into my closet, picked out this black jumpsuit, and then we got into his Lincoln and he had made a playlist of all my favorite songs…it was so simple and wonderful.”

Kat Von D

The tattoo artist and makeup entrepreneur went full drama for her wedding look, and no, her dress wasn’t black as so many fans predicted. Instead, Kat Von D’s red wedding dress was accented by a red veil, hairpieces, and, of course, a bold red lip. She married Leafar Seyer, whose baby she was pregnant with at the time of the ceremony, in 2018.

Dianna Agron

Glee alum Dianna Agron walked down the aisle in 2016 in an embellished nude and gold wedding dress, which reportedly cost (ahem) $20,500, according to Harper’s Bazaar. It was Valentino, after all. She also wore a floral dress in white during the reception at her wedding to Mumford & Son’s Winston Marshall.

Piper Perabo

Piper Perabo married her Covert Affairs director and producer Stephen Kay is a silver dress with a gold veil. The Coyote Ugly actor married her now-husband on July 26th, 2014, and we love this pic taken by the couple’s wedding photographer as they make their way down the street.

Emily Ratajkowski

Emily Ratajkowski opted against a dress entirely for her secret wedding, instead wearing a Zara, mustard-yellow suit. In an interview with Vanity Fair, she talked about why she didn’t want to wear white for her wedding day.

“I never loved the idea of wearing white for a wedding because I’m not a pure woman. I’m a woman with a lot of character and experience and life,” she said. “I also just loved the idea of a suit, especially at City Hall because it’s like you’re taking care of business. I really wanted to wear red actually, initially…and then I just loved mustard yellow and just knew it was the one.”
