Coffee and pasta together. How can this be.

If you’re thinking of having spaghetti for dinner tonight, why not add a little instant coffee to your bolognese sauce? If the thought makes you think you’re going to hurl, you are not alone. But that’s the rather counterintuitive #littletwists tip that U.K. supermarket chain Sainsbury’s suggested their customers try out. Apparently the suggestion is part of a #littletwists campaign in which the supermarket offers little hacks to make “any meal an adventure.” An adventure? Sounds more like a nightmare to some pasta traditionalists.

With this particular suggestion, however, they seem to have grossed out their customers on an epic scale – perhaps even on par with the notorious NY Times suggestion that we use peas in our guacamole (but really, how dare they)

When one gentleman posted the tip on Twitter, claiming it’s “all kinds of wrong,” Sanisbury’s replied that he shouldn’t knock it until he’s tried it.

Other reactions have been equally priceless.

Not everybody is hating on the idea though, in fact some people have pledged to give it a try. Buzzed UK got in touch with Cath Wilkins, head of consumer PR for food at Sainsbury’s. She explained the reasoning behind this particular #littletwist.

“It may sound unlikely but it really works, I promise you, having sampled it myself,” Wilkins said. “The coffee adds a underlying depth of flavour that helps to balance the sweetness of the tomato-based ragu. Rather like adding chocolate to chilli con carne, which is another of our recommended twists – although that one is a little better known.”

So, yes they are seriously suggesting you add instant coffee to your meat sauce. But hey, we won’t know until we try, right?
