Now we know what really happens to our bodies an hour after drinking Coca-Cola
OK, so we all knew soda is probably not the best liquid to put in our bodies. Studies have shown time and time again that the consumption of soda is linked with type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and weight gain —but now, we have new info on the instantaneous effects soda has on our bodies.
The Renegade Pharmacist (aka former U.K. pharmacist Niraj Naik) provided the world with a visual, step-by-step guide to what exactly happens when you drink Coke after one hour. And it’s kind of freaky.
Behold:
Since the print is tiny, we’ll give ya a quick synopsis:
After the first ten minutes: You immediately consume 100 percent of your daily sugar intake. Normally, your body would be like, “WHOA THERE THAT IS A LOT OF SUGAR,” but according to The Renegade Pharmacist, the phosphoric acid “cuts the flavor, allowing you to keep it down.”
After twenty minutes: Your blood sugar spikes and your liver takes this massive amount of sugar and turns it into fat.
After forty minutes: Your body has completely absorbed all the caffeine, causing your pupils to dilate and your blood pressure to rise. More sugar circulates through your very being, thanks to your overworked liver. Energy levels are at peak! You are SO awake!
After forty-five minutes: Dopamine production is a go, which is basically why you feel so good.
After sixty minutes: Things start happening in your body, things that require fancy biochemistry terms to describe. “Phosphoric acid binds calcium, magnesium and zinc in your lower intestine, providing a boost in metabolism,” and “artificial sweeteners also increase the urinary excretion of calcium.”
And THEN, you will need to pee, because caffeine is a diuretic. According to the chart, “It is now assured that you’ll evacuate the bonded calcium, magnesium, and zinc that was headed to your bones, as well as sodium, electrolyte and water.”
And finally, you crash. But that’s not all. You’ve not only peed away all the Coke, but you’ve “infus[ed] it with valuable nutrients your body could have used for things like even having the ability to hydrate your system or build strong bones and teeth.”
That, friends, is what happens after an hour of consuming Coke, according to TRP. While the Internet is currently abuzz with this new chart, one thing we can take away from this is: Moderating how much soda we drink is something that needs to be taken seriously. According to a Gallup poll, 48 percent of Americans drink soda on the daily. Yikes.
Luckily, there are a lot of healthier alternatives to soda. So whenever you’re in need of something a little more interesting than water (hey, we get it), here are some ideas.
