The ‘Sisterhood’ lives on IRL! Oh, the joys of co-stars who become real-deal besties
By now you’ve probably heard that Blake Lively gave birth to a baby girl. But have you heard who the baby’s godmothers are? Um, according to Australian Cosmo, the godmothers are ALL of the sisters of the traveling pants sisterhood. That’s right, Tibby, Lena, Bridget, and Carmen are all besties IRL — though I’m sure they go by their real names, Amber, Alexis, Blake, and America. The foursome has graced our Insta-feed together before, and this new godmother status is the ultimate fan fantasy.
If that news doesn’t fill you with the warmest and fuzziest feeling in the entire world, you might be standing outside in the frigid New England winter air sans coat. There’s just something about co-stars whose off-screen friendship is as strong as (or stronger than!) their onscreen friendship, that restores our faith in whatever needs restoring at the moment. With that in mind, here are some other Hollywood best friends that started off as merely co-stars before they took the plunge into full bestie life. If they ever need a third wheel, we’re all totally available.
Michelle Williams and Busy Philipps
Once upon a time, back in Capeside, Massachusetts, Michelle and Busy met on the set of Dawson’s Creek, and a beautiful friendship was born. Busy is the godmother to Michelle’s — and the late Heath Ledger’s — daughter, Matilda. And this one time, Michelle took Busy as her date to the Oscars. We are DOWN with this trend of taking your BFF to fancy events as your date. Sounds like the most fun. Just two weeks ago, Busy Insta’d the above pic from some glamorous tropical locale. As for the hashtag she used? Obviously #bffs.
Gaby Hoffman and Christina Ricci
All you have to do is bring up Christina in an interview with Gaby, and she will gush about her best friend for days. The two met on the set of one of our favorite movies, Now and Then, and have been best friends ever since. During shooting, the pair used to sneak away, and according to Gaby, once saw Pulp Fiction “like six times” over the course of a single Saturday. Cut to roughly 20 years later, and the two ladies still have their friendship locked down. Gaby still talks about Now and Then in interviews, and still credits the film with introducing her to her bestie. In an interview just a little over a year ago Gaby said: “I loved making Now and Then because I met Christina (Ricci) and we fell in love and became best friends.” This is a friendship 20 years strong.
Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz
Thanks to Charlie’s Angels, the world got a set of power-besties: Cameron and Drew. Both were in the other’s wedding, and they do nothing but stick up for each other, even in interviews. When a radio host brought up Drew’s past issues with addiction, Cameron was quick to shut the interview completely down, and basically hung up the phone. You don’t mess with these best friends.
Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox
This one will forever remain too good to be true. How is it even possible that on-screen best friends we love so much are also off-screen best friends? It’s too much for our hearts to handle. The duo met, obviously, as co-stars on Friends, and have weathered life together ever since. But you already know that. Did you know this? Jennifer is godmother to Courteney’s daughter Coco and Courteney even got engaged while over at her bestie’s house. Yeah, they be tight. So, rumor mill, don’t ever try to tear these ladies apart.
Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale
The High School Musical bond continues, thankfully. Vanessa and Ashley met on the set of HSM (don’t even try and kid yourself, we know you’ve seen it a million times) and have remained ridiculously close ever since. Vanessa was a bridesmaid in Ashley’s wedding, and “bawled [her] eyes out.” They also had an E! special, which basically followed them around LA, and yeah, it was everything we wanted and more.
Is there really anything left to say about the best friend power couple that is Amy and Tina? Basically, these two can conquer anything together, and have been doing just that since they met in Chicago back in 1993. Their careers have followed similar arcs with the duo always finding ways to collaborate – be that on SNL, in films, or co-hosting awards shows. Holland Taylor who worked with the gals on Baby Mama said of Tina and Amy, “Oh my God, I’ve never had so much fun working with anybody as with those two. They’re very different [women]. Tina is very cool and mental. Amy’s just this gushing little oil pump of affection. And yet they’re absolutely peas in a pod. They adore each other. They’re like sisters. They’re like Scottie and Westie puppies in a basket.”
