Making ‘Clueless’ changed director Amy Heckerling’s life in one hilarious way
Twenty years ago, writer/director Amy Heckerling graced the world with an itty bitty movie called Clueless — maybe you’ve heard of it. At the time, it was Heckerling’s third blockbuster hit, following her success with Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Look Who’s Talking. Clueless would become a popular TV show and a cult classic that, like a fine wine, just seems to get better and better with age.
Of all the amazing details from the movie — the jaw-dropping outfits, the witty banter, the existentialism of Ren and Stimpy — Heckerling told People in a recent interview that one line of dialogue has stayed with her more than anything else.
“Whatever!”
“It’s really annoying,” she said. “I use ‘whatever’ all the time. Sometimes you just don’t want to continue with a story and you just hope [people will] fill in the right blanks!”
So much original vocabulary was born from that film, but it was the sassiest quote that stayed with Heckerling the longest. Way hilarious. What a perfect way to keep the spirit of Clueless alive and well in every day life, or like, whatever.
Turns out that catchphrase wasn’t the only thing that Heckerling took with her from set. She revealed to Elle that she also snuck off with the silver Dr. Martens that Tai (Brittany Murphy) wears when she falls down the stairs at the frat party. So cringey, so good.
Plus, even after two decades, Heckerling and her (now) all-star cast keep in touch. She just saw Alicia Silverstone in her new play, goes out to dinner with Paul Rudd, and texts Stacey Dash on the reg. “We’re all tight!” she told People. “I’m so flattered and honored that people like Clueless and remember it.”
Like? As if! I think “love” is more fitting.
Thank you, Amy, for one of the best movies ever and for being such an inspiring lady role model! Happy Birthday, Clueless!
