Whoa! This classic Clue character just got killed off from the game
Apparently Mr. Boddy’s not the only person in the Clue-verse who needs to watch his back.
Fans of the board game will no doubt be bummed to learn that the suspect/housekeeper Mrs. White is no more. We’ll let Academy Award-nominated actress Madeline Kahn, who played White in the movie, weigh in on the news:
Us too, girl. White isn’t just being taken off the board, she’s being replaced! Mental Floss reports that new character “Dr. Orchid” will take her place. According to Hasbro, Orchid is the adoptive daughter of Tudor Mansion’s owner Samuel Black, and “is a biologist with a PhD in plant toxicology, privately schooled in Switzerland until her expulsion following a near-fatal daffodil poisoning incident. She was then home-schooled by the very woman she would go on to replace, the late housekeeper, Mrs. White.”
“It was a difficult decision to say goodbye to Mrs. White — but after 70 years of suspicious activity, we decided that one of the characters had to go,” Hasbro Gaming’s senior vice president of global marketing, Jonathan Berkowitz said in a statement. “Dr. Orchid is a brilliant new character with a rich backstory and links to the Black fortune. We’re sure families around the world will continue to create thrilling murder mysteries with all six suspects inside of the iconic Tudor Mansion. ”
The Dr. Orchid-versions of the board game will go on sale in August. In addition to being a great new character, Orchid (pictured bottom right on the board) will become Clue’s first character of color, and it’s thrilling that this nearly 70-year-old game is taking the opportunity to become more inclusive. And if you miss Mrs. White, just remember, she’s at the bottom of your closet with your other dusty old boardgames, ready to murder someone in the kitchen with a candlestick any time you like.
