Clown contouring is a real thing
Contouring usually looks like science: beauty gurus share photos of themselves with complicated lines on their faces that look like dark, light, and medium constellations. They recommend not to use too much product or use way more highlight than shadow or way more shadow – but only around the tip of your nose – and sometimes it feels like you need a PhD in blending to balance the equation of cream and powder.
YouTuber BellaDeLune wants makeup to be less of a science and more of an art. So, in a collaboration with Instagram makeup guru Makeupby_Alo, she invented “clown contouring.” Yup, that’s right! Clown.
Don’t worry, we’re not talking scary It clown (unless you are into that look, which is totally fine). In her video demonstration, BellaDeLune uses highlight, contour, and concealer creams to draw on a clown face. She mostly follows the basic “rules” of contouring, keeping the shadow colors around the outside of her face, under her cheekbones, and along the sides of her nose. But instead of measured lines, she paints triangles, pink circles, and a tiny little poop emoji on her forehead.
BellaDeLune isn’t clowning around purely for beauty’s sake. She reminds her viewers that you don’t need a certain amount of makeup – or any makeup at all – to feel beautiful. Then, she shuts down h8rs who say that wearing a lot of makeup makes her look like a clown.
“Makeup is fun and it’s a way of expressing yourself. Personally, I cannot tell you how many times I have been called a clown and many other names, and been hated on, because of the way that I use this art form,” she says in the video. “I just did this to show you what a real payasa (Spanish for “clown”) looks like.”
She then blends away the negativity, and wow! Her makeup looks absolutely stunning. Turns out clown contour can make a statement in more ways than one.
Makeupby_Alo, BellaDeLune’s collaborator, shared a contouring before and after photo that also sends a super awesome message. She wrote insults she’s heard about herself all over her face with highlight and contour creams, including hurtful words like “dumb,” “clown,” and nasty.”
“Imagine if you let the things people say to you determine how you look at yourself,” the photo’s caption says. She then challenges her audience to “write those words people throw at you… Blend them away, And see what a beautiful reflection you see in the mirror.”
Yes! Only you get to define beauty for yourself.
These looks are so cool. I think I might have to buy about ten Beauty Blenders before I try them, but it would be crazy therapeutic to paint on a clown face every morning. Heck, maybe I won’t blend it out at all. #clowngoals
