You guys, there’s a super-secret “Cloverfield” sequel
Here’s something no one saw coming: the Cloverfield monster is BACK.
Ever since 2008’s shaky-camera movie hit the big screen, there’s been talk that a sequel was in the works. But, producer J.J. Abrams — known for his love of secrecy — has kept us all in the dark. Until right now. There’s a new trailer for a movie called 10 Cloverfield Lane, which letting the name speak for itself, is a semi-direct sequel to the OG monster movie.
The movie was made under the name The Cellar and Valencia, but now we can call it by its proper title. Though it sounds like it’s not a direct sequel to Cloverfield (because spoiler, the movie kinda ends with a whole lot of death and destruction, but also spoiler, that thing falls into the water at the very end), it sounds like it’s a Cloverfield “cousin.”
“The idea came up a long time ago during production,” Abrams explained to Collider. “We wanted to make it a blood relative of Cloverfield. The idea was developed over time. We wanted to hold back the title for as long as possible.”
The plot of the movie follows a woman (played by the superb Mary Elizabeth Winstead) who wakes up after a car accident to find herself trapped in a cellar with two others, played by John Goodman and John Gallagher Jr. She’s told she can’t travel back to the outside world, because it’s not safe. Because…. the Cloverfield monster is out there?
There’s still a lot of secrecy about the movie, and thankfully we don’t have to wait too long for answers. 10 Cloverfield Lane opens in two short months, March 11th, 2016! Even better, judging from the trailer, it’s got 75% less shaky-camera action.
