If Clinton and UK candidate Theresa May win their elections, politics will be forever changed
The US presidential election is coming up on November 8th, and it’s obviously been a huge topic of conversation in recent months. Hillary Clinton is the presumptive Democratic nominee, which is extremely important for U.S. history as she will likely be the first woman on the presidential ballot!
But something equally exciting is happening in the UK, as home secretary Theresa May is bidding to be their next Prime Minister. And if both Clinton and May are elected, it will be pretty obvious that woman are doing exceptionally well in politics. There is already a female Chancellor in Germany, so they’re ahead of the pack. It’s basically turning into season 6 of Game of Thrones, guys! The women are in charge!
Elections in the UK usually happen every five years, however due to Britain’s recent shocking vote to leave the EU, and current Prime Minister David Cameron’s sharp opposition to it, he has announced his plan to resign from office in October. This will make way for a new Prime Minister, and Theresa May is one of the main candidates for leadership. When she announced her bid to lead the Conservative party, she stated these simple words: “I’m Theresa May and I think I’m the best person to lead this country.”

On women in major political office, the UK actually has a leg up on the US. In addition to already having had a female prime minister, Margaret Thatcher, the country also has legendary queens in its past and present, including both the current Queen Elizabeth and 16th century queen of the same name, as well as Queen Victoria, one of Britain’s longest-serving monarchs.
It will be fascinating to see what happens in both elections, though it’s already clear that both women are leading strong campaigns with a lot of support behind them. If they are both elected, it will be a truly historic occasion for politics, not just in the UK and US, but worldwide.
