The first look at Robin Wright as the president on House of Cards is 100% Kevin Spacey-free — and we don’t miss him

Just a few months after giving us a peek at President Claire Underwood sitting in the Oval Office, Netflix has released the first photos of Robin Wright as the commander-in-chief from the upcoming sixth and final season of House of Cards, and remind us, why didn’t this happen sooner?

The Season 5 finale saw Frank Underwood resign the presidency, leaving his then-VP wife ready to ascend to the highest office in the land. And based on these photos — not to mention the teaser unveiled during the Academy Awards — it certainly looks like Claire’s adjusting nicely to her new role as commander-in-chief.

As Netflix’s first original drama prepares to come to a close later this year, Wright is (rightfully) at the front and center.

Following allegations of sexual misconduct against Kevin Spacey last fall, production on the Netflix series was temporarily suspended as the final season was reimagined without Spacey — and his Frank Underwood.

While the Season 5 finale set up the sixth season to follow Frank’s overtaking of the private sector while Claire manned the Oval Office, Spacey’s firing has shifted the focus solely to Claire — which is honestly more interesting anyway. As Frank’s sociopathic tendencies grew increasingly stale throughout the later seasons of the series, Claire has always been the more compelling character. And we can’t wait to see what she gets up to without Frank manipulating her, taking credit for her schemes, and holding her back from her full potential.

Michael Kelly, Constance Zimmer, Patricia Clarkson, Boris McGiver, Jayne Atkinson, Paul Sparks, and Derek Cecil are also returning to House of Cards for the final season, with Diane Lane and Greg Kinnear joining the cast in unspecified roles (but are rumored to be playing siblings).

The eight-episode sixth and final season of House of Cards will be released later this year on Netflix.
