Christopher Plummer was nominated for the role meant for Kevin Spacey, because karma is a beautiful thing

Here’s further proof that replacing Kevin Spacey with Christopher Plummer in All the Money in the World was a great decision: Plummer nabbed a Golden Globe nomination Monday for the role he stepped into only six weeks before it was set to be released.

Just last month, the movie was done and set to close AFI Fest when disturbing sexual misconduct allegations about Spacey began piling up. Director Ridley Scott pulled All the Money from the festival line-up and announced Spacey, who’d played oil tycoon J. Paul Getty, would be cut from the project. Instead of scrapping the film, the creative team scrambled to reshoot all of Spacey’s scenes with Oscar-winner Christopher Plummer.

And today, the Hollywood Foreign Press recognized Plummer with a Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture nod.

Michelle Williams and Scott also earned Globe nominations for their respective roles in the movie (Williams for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, and Scott for Best Director). Following the announcement of the switch, Williams said it was the least they could do given the circumstances:

"This doesn’t do anything to ease the suffering of people who were all too personally affected by Kevin Spacey, but it is our little act of trying to right a wrong, she told Entertainment Weekly in November. “And it sends a message to predators — you can’t get away with this anymore. Something will be done."

The reshoot reportedly only took nine days and cost the moviemakers an additional $10 million, but they were glad to do it to salvage the film and distance themselves from Spacey. The movie tells the true story of the 1973 kidnapping of 16-year-old John Paul Getty III and his grandfather, billionaire J. Paul Getty (Plummer), who refused to pay his grandson’s ransom.

The question now is, will this swap land Christopher Plummer a win?

He’s up against some fierce competition in the category — Armie Hammer, Willem Dafoe, Sam Rockwell, Richard Jenkins — but it’s possible Spacey’s replacement could pull off a victory.

Let’s just hope Spacey’s other recent replacement, Robin Wright — who will be taking over as the star she always deserved to be on House of Cards following Spacey’s firing from that project — will earn just as many accolades by the time next awards season rolls around.

The Golden Globes, hosted by Seth Meyers, will air on January 7th.
