Casting win: Christina Ricci will play Zelda Fitzgerald
The past few days have been jam-packed with Christina Ricci. First of all, there’s that totally rad picture that has been circulating the Interwebz, featuring the actress — who played Wednesday Addams in the beloved Addams Family movies, as we all know — morphed into Morticia. (Yes, yes, we know it’s entirely fake and Photoshopped, but don’t rain on our fangirling parade, K?)
Now, following Amazon’s big announcement of fall pilots, we found out that the amazing Christina will be playing Zelda Fitzgerald in a new (potential) bio-series. The pilot, entitled Z, will follow the courtship of Zelda and F. Scott (played by Gavin Stenhouse), then will outline their marriage, traveling from Alabama to the French Riviera. Penned by The Killing‘s Nicole Yorkin, it will likely be a less-flashy depiction than most roaring ’20s tales.
“[It’s a dive] into the fascinating life of a woman ahead of her time, an artist determined to establish her own identity in the tempestuous wake of a world-famous husband,” reads a press release about the pilot, according to FlavorWire.
Z is one of six pilots that have been chosen by Amazon in its “Hunger Games-style battle” that it’s conducted since 2013, according to A.V. Club. All six pilots will be screened for free on Amazon video, and then one will be chosen to be made into a full series available to Amazon Prime members, based on user ratings and comments. As Variety explains, three half-hour long comedies are featured alongside three hour-long dramas. You’d think that Z would be in the drama category, but nope — it’s a comedy.
“We have something for everyone in this season and I am excited to see which shows spark conversation amongst our customers and what they want to be made into series,” Roy Price, VP of Amazon Studios, told Variety. We’re pumped, too — after all, Transparent was a totally amazing byproduct of Amazon’s six-pilot contest (it won five Primetime Emmys on Sunday!).
Read more about the other pilots here. In the meantime, we’ll be getting SUPER pumped to see Christina Ricci channeling her best Zelda.
