Christina Applegate revealed why she had her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed
When your health is concerned, sometimes you need to make big calls like this. During an interview with Today, Christina Applegate revealed she had her ovaries removed, along with her fallopian tubes. The move was a preventative measure — the actress, who went through a double mastectomy after being diagnosed with breast cancer a few years back, has a gene mutation called BRCA1 which makes it more likely for cancer to reemerge.
Applegate noted that her cousin passed away from ovarian cancer, so she wanted to remove her ovaries to eliminate any risk.
"Two weeks ago, I had my ovaries and [fallopian] tubes removed," she said. "My cousin passed away from ovarian cancer in 2008. I could prevent that. That's how I've taken control of everything."

We think it’s pretty brave of her to undergo the procedure, and even braver to open up about it. Cancer is something that affects so many of us.
According to Applegate, having the procedure was worth it.
"It's a relief," she said. "That's one other thing off the table. Now, let's hope I don't get hit by a bus."
Applegate got her breast cancer diagnosis back in 2008, when she was only 36. The doctor spotted it in her left breast and luckily took action while it was in the early stages. Still, she decided on the double mastectomy to avoid having to go through the procedure again.
She also reached out to other celebrities who had been through it, notably Melissa Etheridge. According to an interview with Oprah.com, the singer responded to Applegate with nothing but support.
"The first thing she said to me is: 'Christina, this is a blessing that's happened to you in your life. Right now, you get to start over, and right now you get to change everything — the way that you deal with things in life, the way that you react to things. Fear can hurt you. Stress can hurt you. This is the time that you have this opportunity to change the way you eat... everything you do,'" Applegate noted.
We think it’s great that she’s eliminating problems before they start, and wish her nothing but the best.
