One of Christina Aguilera’s iconic songs is actually about an ex who she found out was gay

Christina Aguilera served as a guest judge on the Season 10 premiere of RuPaul’s Drag Race, and while she didn’t come armed with that long-awaited, highly teased new music, she did spill some details about one of her earlier songs during Untucked, the competition’s companion series.

After making yet another promise that new music was on its way, Christina Aguilera chatted with the contestants about some of her hits, including “Fighter,” as Kameron Michaels revealed it was the first song he ever performed in drag. But as the topic turned to the subject of the song — because Christina Aguilera  did *not* mince words in the iconic track — the singer was asked about another track off her Stripped album, “Infatuation.”

Vanessa Vanjie Mateo inquired about the Puerto Rican man the singer refers to in the song, asking, “Who was Puerto Rican? ‘Cause you know I might be related to him.” Aguilera then revealed that the subject of her 2002 deep cut was actually an ex-boyfriend who she later learned was gay. The singer was met with gasps and screams when she said, “It was heartbreaking because I found out he played for your team, not mine.”

“He gonna see this and he gonna be mad!” Mateo said, upon hearing the news, to which Aguilera responded, ‘I hope so!’“

In addition to spilling about her heartbreak, the “Genie in a Bottle” singer also gave the contestants advice on navigating the entertainment industry.

After sharing her experience growing up in an industry where it’s easy to be taken advantage of and used, Aguilera encouraged the contestants to stay true to themselves.

“Once you obtain a certain level of success, you can become jaded and you can see certain people around you change. “That can make you change and feel guarded or shut down and weird. But I think as long as you keep remembering who you are as a person — and keep remembering the good and the good around you — then nothing can stop you.

Breakups are never easy — but at least Christina Aguilera was able to turn the pain into some amazing music.
