Christian Bale says the problem with America is too many “white dudes” are in power, and honestly, yeah

In grade school you learn that America is a “melting pot,” but in this post-Trump world, it’s very evident that it’s a melting pot being governed by a bunch of older white men. Actor Christian Bale was born in England but moved to Los Angeles at 17 because he found himself so enamored with America and all that it promised. The actor sat down with AOL Build to discuss his upcoming movie Hostiles and ended up sharing some thoughts about the U.S. that seriously ring true. As an Englishman living in the U.S. in this day and age, Bale looked around and basically said, there are too many white dudes in positions of power here. And like, yeah, that is accurate.

“Our culture will be so much richer the day that we stop saying ‘Hey it’s all white dudes who are running things,’” Bale revealed during the AOL Build interview. “Whether that be Hollywood, whether that be Washington, you know. We’re going to get, in Hollywood, so much better films and so much more interesting stories being told and America will become the America that the rest of the world sees it as, that makes it unique…that we recognize makes this such a beautiful, brilliant country.”

The English actor says that he always saw America as “a country of inclusion,” and added, “it’s the reason why I moved here. It’s the reason why my kids have American accents.”

America needs to remember its mission statement to the world as a “country of inclusion” — we’ll only continue to drift further from that ideal if, to quote Bale, “white dudes” continue to be in charge at the highest offices in every industry. It’s time to upend the power structures of whiteness, and to have the country embody the message that brought so many to it many years ago.
