What’s happening with Chrissy Teigen and Instagram’s rules about boobs vs. butts
Model Chrissy Teigen is an Instagram guru. In the past, she has used the social media platform to provide us with behind-the-scenes glimpses of the Oscars, to respond to memes with the utmost hilarity, and to spark self-love movements with the flash of an iPhone camera. On Tuesday, the 29-year-old got our attention again when she posted a picture of her husband’s (aka John Legend’s) bare bottom, saving some of his modesty with one of her well-placed knees.
While the photo may seem like a groovy callback to Austin Powers, we think there’s more than meets the eye on this one.
Teigen has been one of many celebrity Instagramers who have fallen victim to the social media site’s somewhat Puritanical rules on nudity, and had a revealing picture from a recent “W” magazine shoot taken down last week that showed her bare breasts in an editorial spread.
She then fired back with a selfie, still in full hair and makeup, her nipple cleverly hidden by a well-placed can of hairspray.
Per Instagram, nipples are famously banned from the site, unless the picture in question is about post-mastectomy scarring and women “actively breastfeeding.” In response to Instagram’s rules barring female nipples (and actively removing posts featuring them), Miley Cyrus, Cara Delevingne, Scout Willis, and countless other women have waged #FreeTheNipple protests—in some cases, Photoshopping male nipples onto female nipples to prove a point: there’s a double standard when it comes to women’s bodies.
But wait, there’s another no-no on Instagram—“close-ups of fully-nude buttocks,” according to their site regulations. Notice how Instagram hasn’t yet removed Teigan’s latest image featuring, ahem, a gentleman’s rear-end.
It appears Teigen’s testing the waters of Instagram’s overlords and we don’t mind it one bit.
With the only caption for Legend’s bare bottom reading, “@Instagram,” looks like Teigen has officially thrown the gauntlet.
Your move, Instagram.
