The surprisingly body-positive message Chrissy Teigen got from Sports Illustrated
Being a model is no walk in the park, especially when you constantly have to worry about how you look from head to toe. And even though Chrissy Teigen is absolutely wonderful in all respects, even she isn’t immune to image pressure.
“Since I started modeling, I was actually the athletic, curvy one, which is so crazy because I can’t play any sports,” she told HuffPostLive. “I am in no way curvy. I wish I had the hips and the little waist and everything. But I was always kind of more box-shaped.”
Teigen then goes on to explain that her body type prevented her from working at NYFW: the dream event for models everywhere. “To them I was a catalog girl or lingerie,” she added. “I wasn’t ever invited to walk in a New York Fashion Week fashion show. It wasn’t something that ever crossed my mind, not just because of my size, but because of my height and everything too.”
Surprisingly, it was in the wake of her initial meeting with Sports Illustrated that Chrissy noticed that the fashion industry was becoming more body-positive. During her very first encounter with the magazine’s editor, she thought she was going to be asked to try on a swimsuit – but that wasn’t the case. Instead, it was a simple, face-to-face conversation where the two learned more about one another. By the end of the two-hour meeting, the model was sure that she wouldn’t be featured in the magazine because she never had to change into a bathing suit.
“Then I learned later on, they really just want women of all shapes and sizes,” Teigen reveals. “Your body type isn’t important to them. It was way more about having a personality and being able to represent this iconic brand.”
It turns out that the media franchise didn’t stop there with their body positivity. “I’ve done six Sports Illustrated shoots, and every single time I get an email from them hoping that I haven’t lost weight,” says the talented woman. “It’s such a cool thing, no other client has ever said that to me, like, ‘Please don’t lose weight.’”
Since we are big fans of both Chrissy Teigen and her food-filled Instagram, we hope that this inclusive trend continues – not just for Teigen, but for each and every model out there.
