Chrissy Metz says a panic attack helped save her life

We know Chrissy Metz from her roles on American Horror Story and This is Us, but what really makes us connect deeply with her is how open and honest she is about her personal life.

In an exclusive interview with People, Chrissy Metz talked about finding happiness after years of dieting and depression.

In her 20s, things just weren’t panning out on the acting front. Metz recalls going on “about two” auditions a year, and when work was really slow she took a job as a junior casting director. That spiraled her further into depression because she was putting her dreams on hold. She noted that she gained “100 lbs” during this unhappy time. But then, something terrible turned into… something great.

She had a panic attack on her 30th birthday, which landed her in the hospital. The silver lining from this scary incident was that it was a wake-up call to start thinking positively — Metz started eating better and walking for 20 minutes every day. And that got her confidence back.

Aaaaaaand then she booked This is Us, playing the spirited character of Kate who’s going through health struggles of her own. “You have to use what you have, and I wouldn’t have this role if I had already lost weight. Now it’s about telling a story of a woman struggling with her weight, just as I have and still am,” Metz said in the interview.

We just love her can-do attitude, and how she’s using her own story of crushing that pesky self-doubt to relate to her on-screen character.

"If you don't love yourself now, you can't ever become the person you're meant to be," Metz said in the same interview.

It’s not hard to see why Chrissy Metz is one of our favorite humans. She’s become a champion for body positivity, and operates one of the most inspiring Instagram accounts around.

Always keeping it real and striving for inner-peace.
