Chris Hemsworth is unrecognizable after transforming for “In the Heart of the Sea”
Chris Hemsworth is no stranger to changing his body for a role. He had to completely bulk up to play Norse God and Avenger, Thor, someone who is so strong and mighty they can lift an impossible hammer. Though that’s the Hemsworth we’ve all come to know and love over the years, for his next role he’s rendered himself completely unrecognizable.
Like, so unrecognizable when I first saw the picture I thought to myself, “isn’t it a little late for Halloween? Why is Thor dressed as Tom Hanks from Castaway for Halloween?”
He looks like a castaway, because he’s playing one in his next movie. For his latest role, in Ron Howard’s In the Heart of the Sea, Hemsowrth plays Owen Chase, a real first mate on a ship that winds up on the wrong side of a whale (and later inspired the story Moby Dick). In the movie, Chase and the crew find themselves washed up on shore with no food, so Hemsworth needed to look like he hadn’t eaten in a really long time.
Hemsworth shared a picture of his movie-body on Twitter, explaining that he was on a “new diet/training program called ‘Lost At Sea.’” He does not recommend this fitness regiment at all.
Talking to Entertainment Weekly this past summer, Hemsworth explained that when he started filming In the Heart of the Sea, he had already slimmed down a little bit for another role. But this one required even more weight loss.
“When I started, I was leaner than my Thor weight,” he explained. “When you’re already starting off lean, it’s brutal to chew through that kind of weight. Every pound feels like a kilogram…[the cast and I] kind of went insane.”
But don’t worry, director Howard assures us that Hemsworth lost the weight “safely.” This is still one crazy, craaaaazy transformation, though.
In the Heart of the Sea opens on Christmas Day, and Thor: Ragnarok doesn’t open until 2017—so don’t worry, Hemsworth has plenty of time to get back into Loki-fighting shape.
