Chris Hemsworth just shared a terrifying tale of nearly dying on a mountaintop
During his recent interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live, demigod moonlighter Chris Hemsworth revealed a life-threatening experience he had while hiking in the Himalayas with his wife, Elsa Pataky. The Spanish model and actress probably assumed her ultra fit husband would be the ideal companion as she filmed a travel show, but in a very serious turn of events, this wasn’t the case.
“We got higher and higher and we ended up at about 4,000 meters (13,123 feet) above sea level,” he explained. “You acclimate every couple of days. You plant yourself in one place and your body adjusts to that lack of oxygen and so on, and you go higher and higher.” But unfortunately for Hemsworth, his body didn’t appropriately adjust to the higher altitudes.
“Have you ever heard of altitude depression?” Hemsworth asked Kimmel. “I got that.” As the actor listed the increasing altitudes his group were reaching, he admitted that at around 3,000 meters, “I started to kind of lose my mind.”

When Kimmel asked what that emotional state looked like, Hemsworth recalled feeling “completely irrational,” and “overly sensitive to the most trivial, silly things.”
But Hemsworth wasn’t the one who initially realized how sick he was, it was the real superhero who saed him: his wife. After waking up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom, Hemsworth returned to his tent with difficulty breathing. He described the labored inhales and exhales as sounding like “Darth Vader meets Daffy Duck.” Pataky knew something was wrong. She immediately alerted their guards.
“They come back and take one look at me and they’re like, ‘Get him off the mountain.’” Hemsworth said he was promptly helicoptered down the mountain. “And they start injecting me with all sort of whatever’s going to adjust my oxygen intake. Apparently, the oxygen in my lungs, the next stage was oxygen in my brain and then – goodnight. We wouldn’t be sitting here.”
“You need a new travel agent,” Kimmel joked.
“Who was monitoring that?!” Hemsworth recalled, still shocked and scarred by the dangerous experience. “Everyone else adjusted, acclimated, but for some reason I couldn’t handle it.”
“Maybe it’s because you’re so handsome,” Kimmel added. “You’re not meant to be up in the mountains away from others, you’re meant to be down amongst the people, bringing joy to their eyes.”
We agree. Hemsworth is way too handsome to be isolated in those higher altitudes. It goes to show even superheroes need a on-alert wife to bring them back down to earth.
