Chipotle is getting more expensive, so prepare your devastation emojis
First Starbucks, now Chipotle? It’s like all my favorite places are pushing me away. But I guess that’s the price (literally) that comes with having such amazing food. In Chipotle’s case, it’s specifically the cost of amazing beef. Because of rising beef prices, the slow-roasted barbacoa or chunks of steak (which already cost you a little extra at check-out) are getting even more expensive. Starting today, ordering either of these tasty ingredients will cost you and additional 4 to 6 percent of your burritos, burrito bowls, salads and even tacos.
According to Chipotle’s communications directer, Chris Arnold, it’s the “continually rising beef prices” that are causing this kind of inflation, but raising prices is not something Chipotle likes to do. In fact, last year was the first time in three years that they raised prices, despite consistent inflation.
This follows some other major Chipotle events. Who could forget the great carnitas shortage of early 2015? That potential tragedy was followed by some good things, like the quesarito and straight-to-your-door chipotle delivery. They’ve become a staple in our fast food experience, so when they go through hard times, so do we.
There is hope. A few days ago, Dylan Grosz of Apartmentlist.com gave us six tricks for getting 86% more Chipotle fo’ free. He gives some ingenious tips, like ordering a bowl with tortillas on the side, since bowls typically get more of the filling. Also, rather than picking white or brown rice, or black or pinto beans, just get a bit of everything. Seriously, it’s amazing. This way, you’re paying more, but getting more at the same time. Guac is still extra, though.
