Uh oh: Looks like Chipotle is struggling with sales, and we’re freaking out
We have so much love for Chipotle, so our hearts were broken to learn that things don’t seem to be going too well for our favorite burrito place. Following another decline in sales for Chipotle, one of the restaurant’s CEOs has stepped down, and we’re sort of freaking out because we absolutely refuse to give up those sofritas! It’s so hard to believe that Chipotle is struggling with sales, considering how much we eat there.
But as customers continue avoiding eating at Chipotle, the decrease in sales seems unstoppable. We refuse to give in so easily! There’s no way in hell we’re giving up those burrito bowls without a fight, or those chips. Ugh.
Remember that time people kept getting sick from eating Chipotle? Well, it turns out that people don’t forget that kind of thing too easily. As a result, Chipotle is struggling with sales.
While we were quick to get back to eating the stuff because, well, obviously, the E. coli scares definitely seem to have impacted sales. According to Business Insider, the business was expecting sales to increase somewhere between 6% to 9%, but in the most recent quarter, their same-store sales dropped by 21.9%.
As a result, Chipotle co-CEO Monty Moran stepped down.
"Monty Moran has stepped down from the co-CEO role and from his board seat effective immediately, and will retire from Chipotle in 2017."
Why? Because the originally beautifully simple message of Chipotle got over complicated, the remaining CEO, Steve Ells, explained. But things seem to be looking a little bit brighter, or so they (and we) hope.
"I'm very much looking forward to relentlessly focusing on ensuring an excellent guest experience, removing unnecessary complexity from our operations, championing innovation, and pursuing our mission of making better food accessible to more people."
We hope sales start looking up, and fast! We can’t imagine a world without our favorite lunch.
