Chipotle lovers, we’ve got some bad news
If you’re jonesing for a burrito Chipotle-style, you might want to put it off for a bit. News broke over the weekend that the chain is closing 43 restaurants in two states following an e. coli contamination.
The closures affect Washington state and Oregon, including stores in and around Seattle and Portland.
“After being notified by health department officials in the Seattle (Wash.) and Portland, Ore. areas that they were investigating approximately 20 cases of E. coli, including people who ate at six of our restaurants in those areas, we immediately closed all of our restaurants in the area out of an abundance of caution,” a spokesperson for Chipotle told Reuters in a statement.
While dozens of people of all ages have been infected by the contamination, only one-third of them have been hospitalized and no deaths have been reported, the Oregon Health Authority says.
Meanwhile, here’s how people on Twitter are reacting to this bummer news:
This is the third such contamination at Chipotle. In September, there was a salmonella outbreak in Minnesota, and in California, several Chipotle restaurants were linked back to over 100 norovirus cases.
What’s been doing Chipotle in, possibly, is the fresh ingredients that we love. They’re healthy, but they’re also put us at greater risk for contracting foodborne illness and infection in a fast food environment. It’s hard out there for a healthy eater who craves convenience.
