This Latinx artist and archivist is LACMA’s first Instagram artist-in-residence
Our new favorite artist: Guadalupe Rosale. Guadalupe is the force behind Veteranas and Rucas, an Instagram account that archives Chicana life in SoCal from the ’90s and earlier, and Map Pointz, an archive of SoCal’s party crew and rave scene in the ’90s. Basically, this woman has seen it all, and she knows a thing or two about the history of Latinx culture in Southern California. Beyond that, she’s responsible for helping to facilitate conversations and dialogue that surround this often overlooked piece of American history.
But don’t take our word for it. Take LACMA’s — because they just tapped Guadalupe as their first Instagram artist-in-residence, taking over their account for six weeks.
This isn’t Guadalupe’s first time taking over a social media account either.
The artist took over The New Yorker’s social media for a week, in what has become one of the top-rated takeovers of the year.
As for Guadalupe’s current residency, it came to fruition after LACMA director Michael Govan discovered her work at the Vincent Price Art Museum in Monterey Park, where she had a silent film with 50 photos from Veterans and Rucas playing on a loop. This led to a discussion about social media and art, and the rest is history.
In an interview with Unframed, Guadalupe says,
"I will be using LACMA’s Instagram platform to show and talk about art in a different way, beginning with my personal take, then offering the platform to the public for an open discussion. I want to have conversations about art with people from different backgrounds, and Instagram is an ideal place for that. It’s where we will all intersect and have dialogue around artworks inside and outside of museums."
As they say, this is one small step for woman and one giant step for womankind. Having an institution like LACMA share the history of Chicana culture is a huge step in the right direction for Latinx artists. We’re so excited to follow along for the next six weeks to see what else Guadalupe has in store.
